About the position

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to work with Professor Joshua Apte in the area of mobile air pollution monitoring. The Apte Research Group uses methods from chemistry, environmental engineering, aerosol science, exposure assessment, and environmental health to understand the relationships between emissions, atmospheric transformations, concentrations, human exposures, and health effects. Contribute as a collaborating scientist to planning and overseeing air pollution field campaigns, especially using the UC Berkeley mobile air pollution laboratory, fixed-site instrumentation deployments, and other air pollution measurement modalities. Under the direction of Prof. Apte, provide day-to-day oversight of the UC Berkeley mobile air pollution laboratory and its associated measurement instrumentation, especially during intensive field studies. Train and mentor undergraduate students and assist in the supervision, training and mentorship of graduate students and postdocs in field air pollution research. Analyze and interpret air pollution measurement datasets, develop reports and communicate findings in peer-reviewed research. Sustain ongoing operation of the mobile air pollution laboratory, including planning and executing maintenance, protocols, upgrades, and data management. Contribute to developing research proposals and securing funding for air quality research projects, especially in regard to mobile monitoring. Assist in the development of individual research lines within the overall mission of the Apte Research Group and the air pollution mobile monitoring projects.
