ABOUT CSUMB
California State University, Monterey Bay is a mid-sized university
in California's Central Coast that grants undergraduate and
graduate degrees. Powered by an inspiring Founding Vision Statement,
CSUMB is part of the nation's largest four-year public university
system, California State
University, which educates nearly 460,000 students every
year.
With a vibrant, diverse student body of over 7,000 students, CSU
Monterey Bay is both a Minority Serving Institution and a Hispanic
Serving Institution. Our staff and faculty transform students'
lives with a focus on student success and engagement through
experiential learning, service learning, and a strong emphasis on
multicultural and global perspectives. CSUMB's sustainability goal
is to be carbon neutral by 2030.
The university's Strategic Plan
prioritizes inclusive excellence through recruiting and investing
in developing a diverse body of faculty, staff and administrators.
Many appreciate living and working close to the shores of beautiful
Monterey Bay, with easy access to recreational areas from Big Sur
to Santa Cruz. Nearby opportunities for collaborative research
include working in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and
Silicon Valley, and with colleagues at local research universities,
including UC Santa Cruz and Stanford University.
As one of the 23 campuses in the CSU system, CSUMB offers excellent

East Campus, and competitive salaries for faculty and staff. With

nearby Pacific Ocean.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Health, Human
Services, and Public Policy (HHSPP), housed in the College of Health Sciences and Human
Services, is dedicated to educating an adaptable workforce of
public health, social work, and public service professionals
working in government agencies and nonprofit organizations to serve
California's diverse communities. Our graduates are proven leaders
who promote equitable access to health and social services,
advocate for policies that support working people, develop programs
that improve community health and well-being, and strengthen the
voices of individuals, families, and communities working to reduce
poverty and improve living standards for all.
Through a student-centered pedagogy, community engagement, and
applied, practice-based scholarship that improves professional
practice, HHSPP prepares students to expand their knowledge and
skills through intensive internships with community-based
organizations and public agencies. Guided by a commitment to
equity, social justice, and ethical practice, our programs empower
students to become effective agents of social change.
HHSPP currently offers undergraduate Bachelor of Science degrees in
Collaborative Health and Human Services (CHHS) and Public Health
(BPH). The CHHS program is a unique transdisciplinary program that
integrates transferable competencies across public health, social
work, and public administration/nonprofit management into a core
curriculum that connects academic theory with real-world practice,
helping students develop holistic, collaborative approaches to
complex social issues that defy traditional, siloed
disciplines.
The BPH program integrates CHHS core courses with more intensive
and advanced public health courses that provide students with
in-depth knowledge in areas of interest, including community health
education/promotion, health care systems/policy, among
others.
HHSPP also offers five minor degree programs - including Community
Health Education, Environmental Health Policy, International Health
Policy, Nonprofit Management, and Social Work. To promote an
engaged faculty and student community, HHSPP courses across all
programs are offered primarily through face-to-face classroom
experiences, with some hybrid and online course delivery formats to
support diverse student learning.
In addition to the current program, the department is planning a
number of exciting new undergraduate degrees (BS in Public Safety)
and certifications (i.e., civil service, wellness coach, etc.). The
department is also working on new master's degrees in public health
(MPH) and public administration (MPA).
HHSPP sponsors the Institute for Community Collaborative Studies
(ICCS), which advances the University's Founding Vision by
strengthening health and human services practice among regional
public agencies and nonprofits through grants and contracts.
Faculty and staff collaborate with community partners on applied
research, program and policy evaluation, technical assistance,
training, and consultation. ICCS also employs CHHS student research
assistants, providing valuable professional and graduate-school
preparation.
