Cornell SC Johnson College of Business
Cornell University
The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor or Associate Teaching Professor position in the Marketing and Management Communication area, with a school affiliation in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. The appointment carries a three-year renewable term at the Assistant Teaching Professor rank or a five-year renewable term at the Associate Teaching Professor rank. Appointment rank will reflect the successful candidate’s experience and accomplishments. The intended start date is July 1, 2027. The position is based in Ithaca, New York.
We seek an accomplished educator who can help students become thoughtful, persuasive, and adaptable communicators in business settings. The successful candidate will connect communication theory with practice, creating engaging learning experiences that prepare students to analyze audiences, communicate complex ideas clearly, and exercise sound judgment in professional interactions.
Responsibilities
This is an academic-year (i.e., nine-month) appointment. Responsibilities include teaching five three-credit courses per year in business and management communication primarily to undergraduate students. Topics may include professional writing, oral presentations, persuasive communication, interpersonal and team communication, leadership communication, and related areas. Preference will be given to applicants who can teach across multiple topics. Teaching assignments may change to meet curricular needs, as determined by College leadership.
Although teaching is the primary responsibility, the successful candidate will also contribute to curriculum development and participate in student and school activities, including student advising, school projects, and academic service. Faculty are expected to teach across multiple schools within the College of Business.
We welcome approaches that bring business communication to life through cases, simulations, applied projects, and opportunities for students to practice, receive feedback, and improve. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues on course design and assessment, provide constructive feedback and student mentoring, and participate in appropriate academic service. It is expected that our faculty teach across multiple schools within the College of Business.
Required Qualifications
Ideal candidates will hold a PhD in business communication or a closely related field, completed by the start date of the appointment. Candidates with related doctoral training must demonstrate expertise relevant to teaching business and management communication. Candidates without a PhD who demonstrate exceptional professional expertise and a distinguished record of teaching excellence in business communication may also be considered. Given Cornell’s student profiles, ideal candidates will have a successful record of teaching graduate and undergraduate students from diverse demographic and educational backgrounds.
Candidates must demonstrate teaching excellence, supported by evidence such as student evaluations, peer observations, teaching awards, or examples of effective course design and student learning. We seek candidates with strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to translate theory into practical learning, and a commitment to supporting students with varied backgrounds and levels of communication experience.
Candidates for appointment at the Associate Teaching Professor rank should demonstrate a sustained record of teaching excellence and contributions to curriculum development or educational leadership appropriate to that rank.
Preferred Qualifications
Relevant business or professional experience is preferred but not required. Such experience may include work in corporate communication, consulting, organizational leadership, or other roles involving substantial professional communication responsibilities.
Additional desirable qualifications include experience developing business communication curricula, using experiential teaching methods, and helping students navigate emerging communication technologies, including the responsible use of generative AI.
