About the position
Position Description
The Department of Biology together with the Schwarzman College of Computing (SCC) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, invites applications for a position in the area of computational biology at the level of a tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2027, or later based on mutual agreement.
We seek candidates who are developing and using computational methods to address questions in molecular, cellular, or organismal biology. We especially welcome applicants focusing on fundamental biological mechanisms who are applying innovative computational, machine-learning, or generative AI approaches in discovery research. An M.D. or Ph.D. in biology, computational biology, systems biology, biomedical informatics, computer science, or a similar discipline is required by the start of employment. Candidates should have extensive prior research experience related to biology.
The successful candidate will have a shared appointment in the Department of Biology and SCC, in either the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) or the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), depending on best fit.
Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop and lead a vibrant, independent research program, play an active role in shaping the academic work and culture of both the Biology and the SCC research communities, and share our commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
Duties include undergraduate and graduate teaching in both Biology and SCC educational programs on computational and machine-learning approaches to biology and related subjects, supervising graduate and undergraduate research, and mentoring trainees at all levels from a broad range of backgrounds. The normal teaching load is two subjects per year, typically co-taught with a colleague.
The successful candidate will be provided with lab and office space for computational work, experimental lab space if needed, a generous start-up package, and access to state-of-the-art core facilities. Together with the SCC, the Department of Biology offers supportive mentorship to junior faculty, an exceptional environment for scientific inquiry, and a strong commitment to an inclusive, welcoming, and collaborative culture; we seek candidates who will contribute to this culture.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a summary of current and proposed research (≤5 pages), a teaching philosophy statement (~1 page), and a mentoring statement (~1 page) describing their experience and/or how they envision leading a group and supporting the scientific development of trainees. Letters of recommendation should be sent separately from at least three individuals able to evaluate the candidate’s accomplishments and future potential.
Application materials and letters of recommendation should be submitted to Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32927).
Application deadline is December 1, 2026.
Pay range for a 9-month academic appointment as tenure-track Assistant Professor: $143,200 – $154,000
