About the position
The School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for appointment to the faculty at the Assistant Professor rank. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a field of expertise focused on the evolving relationship between people and computing systems. HCI researchers design and study new ways for people to interact, collaborate, create, work, and make decisions with technology, and investigate how emerging computing systems shape human capabilities, practices, organizations, and society. Methods include the design and development of novel systems, experimentation, qualitative and ethnographic research, participatory design, computational methods, field studies, and mixed-methods research. We seek applicants who are defining the next generation of human-computer interaction: developing new ways for people to interact, collaborate, create, work, and make decisions with increasingly intelligent computing systems. We are particularly interested in scholars who both imagine and build new forms of human-computer interaction and rigorously investigate how these technologies shape people, organizations, and society. We welcome research across HCI and related fields, including, but not limited to, human-AI interaction and collaboration, intelligent and adaptive interfaces, social and collaborative computing, the future of work, accessibility, values such as sustainability, privacy, and justice in and through design, ubiquitous and embodied computing, information visualization, human-robot interaction, and emerging interaction modalities. We welcome a broad range of methodological approaches, including the design and development of novel systems, experimental and computational methods, qualitative and ethnographic research, field studies, participatory and critical design methods, and mixed-methods approaches. Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential to establish an internationally recognized research program, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in HCI, and engage with the School of Information’s interdisciplinary community. The School of Information is a graduate research and education community committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. This requires the insights of scholars from diverse fields — information and computer science, design, social sciences, management, law, and policy.
