About the position
The Department of Biological Sciences at The George Washington University (GWU) invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Neurobiology at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin as early as Fall 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an externally funded research program that integrates graduate and undergraduate students and investigates basic cellular and molecular questions in neurobiology. The successful candidate will also strengthen our multidisciplinary teaching program by teaching a course in Molecular Biology and a new course for our Neuroscience major, related to the successful candidate’s area of expertise.
The Department of Biological Sciences brings together investigators using diverse experimental systems and cutting-edge molecular, cellular, genomic, physiological, and computational approaches to address fundamental questions in biology. The Department has broad strengths spanning neuroscience, anatomy and physiology, cell and molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and organismal biology. The department seeks a candidate with complementary expertise who investigates fundamental questions in cellular and molecular neuroscience using non-mammalian experimental models, including but not limited to neural development and function, neurophysiology, neurobiology of behavior, neuroimmune interactions, and neural regeneration and repair.
Abundant opportunities exist for interdisciplinary research and collaboration across the Department, the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the broader George Washington University community. The University's location in Washington, DC provides opportunities for collaborations with federal agencies, research institutes, hospitals, and biomedical organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Children's National Hospital, and other institutions within the region's exceptionally strong biomedical research community. Faculty can also engage with GW's interdisciplinary research centers and programs spanning neuroscience, biomedical sciences, computational biology, immunology, and translational medicine. The Department provides access to a diverse and accomplished community of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as opportunities to mentor trainees through GW's interdisciplinary graduate programs.
The Department of Biological Sciences is committed to building a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive intellectual community in which faculty, trainees, and staff can thrive. We value scientific innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, excellence in teaching and mentorship, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives that strengthen our research and educational missions.
Office and laboratory space will be located in GWU’s Science and Engineering Hall, a newer building on campus which opened in January 2015 (https://www.gwu.edu/research-resources#Discovery) and offers state-of-the-art imaging and nanofabrication facilities. Our location in Washington, DC offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate mentorship opportunities through proximity to the National Institutes of Health, Janelia Research Campus, the Smithsonian Institution and a consortium of DC-area universities.
Required Qualifications: (1) a completed PhD in neurobiology or a closely related field; (2) research expertise in cellular and molecular neuroscience using non-mammalian experimental models; (3) at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience at the start of the position; and (4) research accomplishments as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.
