Job Advertisement for Assistant Professor of the Practice, Career Track
Field: History and Production of Hip-Hop

The Department of African & African American Studies (AAAS) at Duke University in Durham, NC invites applications for a career-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of the Practice specializing in the history and production of hip-hop music.
Applicants should be prepared to teach large and small undergraduate classes on topics including the history of hip-hop, hip-hop production, and Black popular culture. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required for consideration. Applicants must also have a graduate degree(s) and/or specialized creative expertise in the music industry. The candidate should have a strong record of successful teaching at the undergraduate level, evidence of scholarly and/or creative production, and familiarity with the various developments and debates within Black Studies. In addition to teaching two classes per semester, or four per year, the candidate must continue to develop their scholarly and/or creative portfolio, contributing further to the academic ecosystem of the department. The candidate will also be expected to provide service to the department and university. This includes attending department meetings and events, mentoring and advising students, serving on committees, and being part of a robust intellectual and social community.
