About the position
Position Description
The International Comparative Studies Program at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice that begins July 1, 2027, and ends June 1, 2031. This is a regular-rank renewable faculty position with an initial four-year term. We seek a candidate whose research is at the intersection of Global Studies and Science and Technology Studies. The successful candidate will bring interdisciplinary and critical approaches to understanding how technologies fuel and are shaped by global circulations of capital and labor, empire, surveillance, migration, supply chains, humanitarian projects, activism and resistance, embodiment, or other themes consistent with the mission, learning outcomes, and curriculum of International Comparative Studies, as described below.
International Comparative Studies (https://internationalcomparative.duke.edu) is an undergraduate interdisciplinary program that bridges the humanities and social sciences. Students pursue a Global Studies major that focuses on one of seven world regions (Africa, China and East Asia, Russia and Central Asia, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East, and Europe) through language acquisition, area studies course work, and interdisciplinary courses. The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in the humanities and/or social sciences prior to appointment, be engaged in research and teaching that explores transregional institutions, discourses, and relationships, and be interested in pursuing interdisciplinary and cross-regional collaborations. The selected candidate will demonstrate interest in teaching core ICS courses as well as courses that incorporate digital research methods, and will supervise senior theses, work effectively with students and colleagues, and contribute appropriate service in the program, including undergraduate advising and mentoring and active participation in curriculum-building. Possible disciplines include human geography, socio-cultural anthropology, transnational or global history, environmental studies, women and gender studies, cultural studies, and global media studies. Candidates who conduct research in one or more of the seven regions in which ICS students concentrate will be given priority. The position carries a 2/2 teaching load with expectation that one course will be in the candidate’s area of specialization.
To apply, please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a writing sample or publication of no more than 28 pages, a one-page teaching statement, and one syllabus for a class you have taught (courses with an interdisciplinary and/or global scope will be especially relevant). In addition, the names and contact information of three recommenders must be submitted with the application. We will only request letters if you are shortlisted. All material should be submitted electronically through the following link: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/33131. Applications received by December 14, 2026 are guaranteed consideration.
If you have questions please contact the Chair of the committee, Professor Jessica Namakkal or ICS Business Manager, Briani Meyers.
