About the position

Eckerd College invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Theatre scenic design and/or costume design, beginning in August 2027. We seek a dynamic artist-educator committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarly research and/or professional creative work in a collaborative and growing Theatre department within a liberal arts environment. An earned terminal degree in Theatre (M.F.A. or Ph.D. in a closely related field) is required for this appointment. Applicants should have expertise in scenic design and/or costume design at the collegiate, secondary, and/or professional levels, and evidence of effective college teaching in your field of expertise. Additional experience in other areas of theatre design (lighting, sound, properties) are also encouraged. Applicants near completion of their degree are welcome to apply, but an earned M.F.A. or Ph.D. is required before August 1, 2027.

Teach seven courses per academic year (3-1-3), including primarily 100-level theatre production courses, with some advanced theatre design courses, manage the College's costume department, and serve as production manager for four theatre productions per academic year, managing production budgets, purchasing, and production schedules. Additionally, participation in an interdisciplinary general education program is required, including regular rotation in two common core courses and a first-year seminar program.

Eckerd College, the only independent national liberal arts college in Florida, has a tradition of innovative education and teaching/mentoring excellence. In addition to a B.A. degree in Theatre, we offer a 2 + 2 program through an articulation agreement with Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City. Successful applicants spend two years at Eckerd College, and two years in a conservatory training program at Circle in the Square Theatre School. This partnership results in a choice of one of two degrees granted by Eckerd College: a B.F.A. in Theatre or Musical Theatre.

Submit a letter of application, vita, copy of graduate transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations (if available), a description of scholarly research and/or creative plans, and contact information for three references so that letters of recommendation can be requested, via http://eckerd.exacthire.com/jobs. Completed applications must be submitted by January 1, 2027. Inquiries may be sent to Professor Gavin Hawk, hawkge@eckerd.edu.
