About the position
The Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a teaching-track position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor , 100% time, open fields. Assistant Teaching Professors are full members of the academic senate and are eligible for Security of Employment, equivalent to tenure. The responsibilities of Assistant Teaching Professors emphasize teaching large enrollment courses, especially at the undergraduate level, and contributing to the teaching mission of the department. The Assistant Teaching Professor would lead the pedagogical training of the Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and participate in the department’s Undergraduate Committee, ensuring that the GSIs and Faculty are aligned in delivering the best instruction to undergraduates. Assistant Teaching Professors are also expected to maintain professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, and to contribute to university and public service as senate faculty. About the Department: The Department of Economics is among the largest teaching and research departments at UC Berkeley and is consistently ranked among the top five in its field worldwide. The department employs 17 departmental staff, approximately 40 ladder-rank faculty, and maintains a total academic membership of approximately 70 scholars, including joint appointments, lecturers, visiting faculty and active emeritus. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application) Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international) degree-granting program at the time of application. Preferred qualifications Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in Economics or a related field completed by date of appointment preferred. Candidates are preferred to have demonstrated potential and/or a proven record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, especially in large enrollment courses, and scholarly experience in economics. It is preferred if candidates have a record and/or potential for pedagogical innovation and effective leadership, including demonstrated ability to manage large enrollment courses staffed with teams of graduate student instructors. Candidates are preferred to have experience or demonstrated commitment to professional service. The preferred candidates for a position will have demonstrated that they are promising or established educators in economics and who are interested in a teaching-focused career. Applicants should be excited about the opportunity to teach large (400+ student) undergraduate courses and would develop and share best practices for teaching a diverse student body, particularly relevant with the rapidly changing environment for undergraduate education in the era of AI.

Professional and/or scholarly activities may be related to the underlying discipline itself or to the pedagogy. Such activities should provide examples of achievement, leadership, and/or influence. Certain administrative work (e.g., of learning centers and teaching programs) and community outreach work are also relevant, as would be presentations of seminars or lectures at other institutions or professional societies, or participation in scholarly activities (e.g., summer seminars) designed to enhance scholarly expertise in relevant fields.
