About the position

The laboratory of Dr. Andrew R. Marks, Chair, Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to lead projects in investigating the role of the ryanodine receptor (RyR), a calcium channel, in normal and pathological physiology. Abnormal calcium handling has been implicated in several diseases, and one of the candidate’s primary duties will be to investigate the role of RyR in pathophysiology using several unique animal models. The Associate Research Scientist will lead the lab’s effort to study cardiac and brain function and physiology in these animal models. Responsibilities will include performing echocardiography, ECGs, and LTP measurements in animal models, investigating protein biochemistry and purification, analyzing protein-protein interactions, studying intracellular calcium handling in isolated cells, as well as single channel analysis of the ryanodine receptor isolated from normal and diseased tissue. The Associate Research Scientist position will also be responsible for overseeing the work of more junior research staff and may direct the implementation of laboratory processes/protocols. We are translating fundamental discoveries into ongoing clinical trials. Recent laboratory members have gone on to leading academic and pharmaceutical industry positions.

Qualifications

All applicants should have a PhD or MD/PhD, outstanding publications, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, work ethic, the ability to work independently, and experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, calcium signaling, protein purification, electrophysiology, and/or animal studies including heart failure models.
