About the position
Position Description
The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley plans to hire one or more Postdoctoral Scholars in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics, including quantum condensed matter theory, statistical physics, many-body physics, and soft matter physics. This postdoctoral position is funded by the Berkeley Condensed Matter Theory Center, and successful applicants will be free to collaborate with all of its members (professors Altman, Lake, Ledwith, Lee, Moore, and Zaletel). The position has an anticipated duration of three years and includes subsidized benefits in addition to a competitive salary. Candidates should have received a Ph.D. in physics by the start date of the position (August or September 2027) and have demonstrated excellence in research and scientific communication at the time of application.
The successful candidate is expected to work closely with members of the theory center, whose current interests include: nonequilibrium quantum and classical systems; information-theoretic aspects of many-body systems; statistical physics; the physics of learning; quantum materials; numerical methods for simulating quantum many-body systems; and problems at the interface between quantum information and condensed matter physics. A listing of current faculty and details of current research are available at (https://physics.berkeley.edu/research-faculty/condensed-matter). Pages of incoming faculty are available at https://ethanlake.github.io/ and https://physics.mit.edu/research/pappalardo-fellowships-in-physics/patrick-ledwith/.
Applications will be processed through AcademicJobsOnline.org. Review of applications will begin Nov 19, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a CV that includes a publication list, a two-page statement of research interests, and should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be communicated to the website by the recommenders. Inquiries regarding the application process may be directed to an appropriate faculty member. UC Berkeley is an affirmative action/equal employment opportunity employer and is dedicated to recruiting a diverse research community.
