About the position

Faculty Position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in Large
Animal Anesthesia – Academic Clinician Track

Location: Kennett Square, PA

Open Date: Oct 30, 2026

Deadline:

The Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet)
invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant or
Associate Professor level in large animal anesthesia, with a focus
on equine anesthesia. The position will be in the Associated
Faculty in the Academic Clinician (AC) track, which focuses on
clinical service and teaching. A typical division of effort for
faculty in the AC track at New Bolton Center is 90% time on
clinics, including clinical service and clinical teaching, and 10%
time off clinics for academic efforts. Didactic and laboratory
teaching and administrative or other service duties are included in
both on- and off-clinic time.

Applications are also being accepted for the position in our
Clinician-Educator track, which carries with it assigned time and
expectations for research or other scholarly productivity. Please
see position number ***** for further details on the position as
Clinician Educator. A total of two positions will be
filled.

This position offers the opportunity to join a team of passionate
clinical and didactic educators with a shared commitment to
excellence in patient care and a significant emphasis on teaching
in the clinical environment. The Section of Anesthesia is home to
four diplomates of the American or European Colleges of Veterinary
Anesthesia and Analgesia and to three anesthesia technicians. Five
residents in training for ACVAA/ECVAA board certification divide
their time between Penn Vet's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital
for Companion Animals and the New Bolton Center Hospital, while an
additional clinical fellow is dedicated full-time to New Bolton
Center.

Clinical service and clinical teaching are at the heart of this
position. The New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals provides
an exceptional environment for both, with approximately 1,400
animals anesthetized each year for a wide variety of procedures.
Clinical responsibilities include primary anesthesia care, pain
management, supervision and mentorship of technicians and residents
in the anesthetic management of patients (the majority of which are
equine), as well as participation in the after-hours anesthesia
rotation. Clinical effort is based at the New Bolton Center
Hospital; however, faculty who are interested may also have
opportunities to participate in the clinical services at the Ryan
Veterinary Hospital as well as in delivery of anesthesia at zoos
and animal parks in the surrounding area.

The Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center includes more
than 40 diplomates of American and European specialty colleges,
including 15 faculty who are double-boarded, providing
opportunities for interaction across a broad range of specialties.
The faculty share a strong commitment to collaborative,
compassionate patient care. The multidisciplinary environment
provides frequent opportunities for case discussion and exchange of
perspectives across specialties, including through morbidity and
mortality rounds, grand rounds, clinical ethics discussions, and
informal consultation on the clinical floor. Anesthesiologists are
valued contributors to these discussions and to patient care
throughout the hospital.

Teaching is integrated throughout the clinical program and provides
opportunities to work closely with veterinary students, interns,
residents, technicians, and colleagues. In addition to case-based
teaching on the clinical floor, faculty contribute to didactic and
laboratory instruction and other educational activities. The
position is particularly well-suited to an individual who enjoys
teaching in the context of clinical practice, values mentorship and
the exchange of ideas, and would welcome the opportunity to help
learners develop their knowledge, technical skills, clinical
reasoning, and confidence. Penn Vet students and house officers are
highly qualified, motivated, and eager to learn, and faculty share
a strong commitment to creating a supportive and engaging
educational experience.

Research is not a requirement of this position; however, faculty in
the AC track who have an interest in scholarly activity are welcome
to participate in collaborative projects, including clinical
research, study design, enrollment of clinical cases in research
trials, and manuscript preparation. New Bolton Center's active
research community provides opportunities for involvement at a
level that complements each faculty member's clinical and
educational interests.

The successful candidate has the potential to access the clinical,
teaching, and research units on the campus, including the
Veterinary School's 200-cow
Marshak Dairy and the 250-sow
Penn Swine Teaching & Research Center. The Advanced Imaging
and Translational Center, currently in the pre-construction phase,
will provide state-of-the-art imaging modalities such as 3T MRI,
multi-axis mobile-gantry CT, and intra-operative CT. Opportunities
exist for interaction and collaboration with other initiatives and
departments, including the
Center for Stewardship Agriculture and Food Security,
Pathobiology,
Wildlife Futures, and core laboratories.

Located in the heart of Chester County's horse country, Kennett
Square offers an appealing blend of rural beauty and small-town
charm. The area's rich equestrian tradition, farms, and vibrant
community create opportunities to pursue interests outside of work,
from riding and local competitions to exploring the scenic
countryside. A welcoming downtown with restaurants and shops, along
with convenient access to Philadelphia and Wilmington, makes
Kennett Square a rewarding place to live and build a career.
