About the position

Fitzwilliam College invites applications for a stipendiary Research Fellowship in English, Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic or Classics; starting 1 October 2027 and lasting three years. The Fellowship is generously funded by the Isaac Newton Trust.

Criteria

The Fellowship is open to graduates of any gender, any University with no age limit but will normally be awarded to candidates who have recently completed their PhD or are close to completion. Candidates are expected to have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) by the commencement of the Fellowship on 1 October 2027. Appointments will be made on the basis of academic distinction and potential contribution to the College community.

The Research Fellow will become a member of the Governing Body of the College. Research Fellows are frequently invited, but not obligated, to undertake (for an additional payment) up to four hours of small group teaching per week. The ECRF will receive a salary at spine point 26 [post PhD] (rising to point 28 and 30 for subsequent two years) [£26,449-£28,732pa as at August 2025]. The stipend is pensionable. Rent-free single accommodation will be offered in College (a taxable benefit) with a charge to cover services, or an additional live out allowance will be provided [£3,958 as at August 2025] for any Research Fellow not resident in College. If living out, study facilities will be provided.

Fitzwilliam is part of a group of Colleges operating a Joint Application Scheme for Early Career Research Fellowships. A total of eight Fellowships are being offered in this cycle, at Churchill College, Clare College, Fitzwilliam College, Murray Edwards and Trinity Hall, but candidates are advised that competition is likely to be intense; last year almost 1300 applications were received.
