Research scientist
The Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist for a full-time permanent position within the European Research Council (ERC)-funded project “Converging Cancer Neuroscience and Immuno-Oncology for a Novel Gene Therapy Against Brain Tumours”. The preferred start date for the position is 1 January 2027.
The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and currently provides funding for this position until 30 September 2031.
The researcher will work on a complex and interdisciplinary cell biology project spanning the fields of cancer neuroscience and immuno-oncology. Mechanisms of communication between tumours and astrocytes, as well as interactions between cancer cell death and macrophages, will be investigated with the aim of developing a novel treatment for brain tumours.
About the project/work tasks:
- Perform in vitro and vivo experiments for the project
- Analyze and interprete experimental data
- Perform Bioinformatics analyses of RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics data
- Participate in manuscript writing and writing of grant applications
- Supervise Masters and PhD students
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must hold a relevant Norwegian PhD or equivalent doctoral degree
- The successful applicant must have experience in cell and molecular biology including methodologies such as mammalian cell culture (handling and experiments), and flow cytometry. The applicant must have experience in conducting animal experiments and in basic bioinformatics analyses such as RNA sequencing.
- The applicant should have experience in analyzing spatial transcriptomics data and in confocal microscopy.
- applicants who have experience also in immunology, neuroscience and cancer research are particularly welcome to apply for this position
- The applicant should be experienced in counseling, teaching, writing manuscripts and preferentially also grant applications
- The applicant must be motivated and responsible, and also have a great work capacity and enthusiasm for research
- Personal skills, including abilities to work independently and cooperate within a research group will be evaluated
- The candidate must be fluent in written and oral English
- Experience with international collaboration is an advantage

Special Requirements for the Position:
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulations governing the Norwegian export control system. These regulations will be applied in the assessment and processing of the applications.

The following premise forms the basis for the post as research scientist:
- The position is permanent; however, it is currently funded through external research grants. Applicants should note that the continuation of the position is subject to the availability of funding. Should the funding cease, this may constitute grounds for termination of employment pursuant to the Norwegian State Employees Act, including the provisions governing notice of dismissal and preferential rights.
- The researcher will be a member of the research group of which the topic/project belongs to
- The salary shall if possible be 100 % covered by external financing
- The researcher shall actively contribute to attract external funding to the research project, both for her/his own position and other positions, from the Research Council of Norway, EU and other sources
- The researcher is expected to have her/his research activity financed by the project of the researcher and the projects of the associated research group
- The Head of Department may allocate work for the Researcher related to specific research projects
- The researcher may participate in committee work and other administrative tasks within the University of Bergen
- The researcher has no teaching duties, but is expected to supervise master students and PhD candidates when this is a natural part of the research activity of the research group
- The researcher may apply for competence promotion according to the regulations for promotions

- Salary NOK 690 000 (code 1109), specialist NOK 710 000 gross p.a. for a fulltime position. In the case of a highly qualified applicant, a higher salary may be considered.
