Junior Professor (Tenure Track) of Experimental Solid-State Physics with a Focus on Spin Physics

About the position

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) was selected in 2026 as a German University of Excellence as part of the Rhine-Main Universities with Darmstadt and Frankfurt in the vibrant Rhine-Main science region. While particularly strong in Physics, its status as a comprehensive university fosters multidisciplinary learning and teaching, in turn paving the way for its internationally renowned, interdisciplinary research. Almost all of its faculties and departments are located on a single campus close to the Mainz city center, creating a lively academic culture for researchers, teaching staff, and students from all over the world.

The Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science invites applications for the position of

Junior Professor (Tenure Track) of Experimental Solid-State Physics with a Focus on Spin Physics

salary grade W1 LBesG (civil servant with a fixed-term contract) with tenure track to W2 (permanent professorship)

to be filled at the earliest possible date.

We are seeking a candidate who has demonstrated initial scientific achievements in research, the ability to conduct independent research at a high international level, and whose research focus lies in a current area of experimental spin physics related to solid-state physics.

Spin-related research is a highly successful focus area at JGU, which boasts excellent infrastructure (a technology platform featuring nanofabrication and characterization, spectroscopy, a helium liquefier for low-temperature experiments, etc.) and a number of coordinated research projects in which participation is encouraged. The candidate will represent the field of spin physics in selected areas that fit within the overall scope of activities in this field.

Participation in coordinated research networks such as, but not limited to, the Collaborative Research Center SFB/TRR 173 Spin+X and the top-level research area TopDyn – Dynamics and Topology enables cooperative research in an active environment with excellent equipment. Involvement with other programs, such as the Max Planck Graduate Center with Johannes Gutenberg-University or the Spin Phenomena Interdisciplinary Center is possible.

The holder of the position will take part in the general teaching assignments of the faculty and the candidate is thus expected to possess the necessary English language skills. Also, the willingness to eventually offer courses in German after the tenure evaluation is expected.

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in section 54 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Junior professors in a tenure-track position will first be appointed civil servants for the duration of six years. Following this period, the position will be converted to a tenured professorship (salary grade W 2 LBesG), provided that the candidate has successfully demonstrated their suitability.

JGU firmly supports making family and career compatible and welcomes qualified applications from people with di- verse backgrounds. JGU aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and therefore encourages female researchers to apply. Candidates with severe disabilities or with equivalent status and appropriate qualifications will be given priority.
