About the role:

The Department of Surgery & Cancer (S&C) is seeking a Laboratory Manager to support the administration and management of research laboratories and facilities across the Division of Cancer, which operates across the Hammersmith Hospital and White City, Charing Cross Hospital, and South Kensington campuses. The post holder will work in close and supportive partnership with academics, researchers, technical staff, students, and professional services colleagues to facilitate research and teaching activities and ensure the effective operation of laboratories and facilities across the Division's multi-campus research environment.

You will support the Head of Division and Principal Investigators (PIs) in fulfilling their Health and Safety (H&S) responsibilities across the Division's research laboratories and facilities. The post holder will be a member of the S&C H&S Compliance team, carrying out inspections and supporting compliance activities across laboratories and research facilities within the Department.

What you would be doing:

The role is responsible for the overall management and smooth operation of research laboratories and facilities across the Division's multi-campus research environment, including health and safety compliance, equipment maintenance, procurement, stock control and general day‑to‑day operational support. The post holder will maintain equipment and infrastructure, coordinating refurbishments and relocations, and work closely with central departments including Estates, ICT, Finance and Safety as required.

The post holder will lead on training and induction of staff and students, promoting safe and efficient laboratory practices. This includes delivering inductions, supporting compliance, providing first-line advice, resolving operational issues and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, service providers and external contractors.

What we are looking for:

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands, maintain high standards and provide reliable administrative support to ensure research laboratories & facilities operate efficiently and smoothly.
  • Proactive and effective communication skills, with the ability to support the implementation of Imperial College London policies and procedures.
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to prepare reports, procedures and operational documentation, and contribute to grant applications where required.
  • Strong record keeping skills to monitor and maintain critical compliance and operational records including safety documents, equipment assets, service and maintenance records and consumable inventories.
  • The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and deliver tasks to agreed deadlines.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to work closely and effectively with Imperial contractors, central professional services, academic, clinical & industrial partners across the Department and the College.

Further Information

This role is full-time, open-ended (35 hours per week) primarily based at Hammersmith Hospital & White City Campus (primarily), travel to other campuses will be required.
