About the position
The Department of German at UC Berkeley, in collaboration with Center for Jewish Studies, seeks applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach Yiddish courses in any of the possible areas: • Yiddish language courses (of various levels) • Upper-level literature/culture courses in such areas as history of Yiddish culture, contemporary Yiddish culture, and related topics In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus), maintaining a course website, and using a learning management system (e.g. bCourses at UC Berkeley, Canvas, etc.). Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application) Master’s degree or equivalent international degree Preferred qualifications • Native or near-native fluency in Yiddish and English. • College level teaching experience in the U.S. • For language instruction: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current language-teaching methodologies. • For literature/culture instruction: Demonstrated expertise in Yiddish language, literature, and culture, with possible emphasis in Yiddish film, Yiddish-language political and social history, and related topics.
