Position Description The Department of Music at Duke University seeks to hire an instructor to teach applied viola to music majors, minors, and non-majors. The position entails a teaching load of up to 8 hours per week, along with participation in additional string area activities for one hour per week. This is a one semester non-regular rank leave replacement faculty position for the spring 2027 semester. Primary Responsibilities: • Applied Lessons: provide weekly viola instruction to undergraduate and graduate students. • Chamber Music Coaching: coaching of up to three chamber music ensembles as part of the 8 hour teaching load. • String Area Events: attend and support all string area activities, including: o viola area recitals o viola/string/chamber music master classes o student recitals o 1-2 studio classes The instructor will be expected to ensure continuity and a smooth transition for existing viola students. A high level of professionalism, reliability, and integration into the department’s curriculum is essential. A master’s degree or higher in viola performance is required, as well as demonstrated excellence in viola performance and broad knowledge of the repertoire. In addition, candidates must have collegiate-level teaching experience, including individual instruction and chamber music coaching. Please submit a CV and cover letter by October 30, 2026.
