PhD student in meteorology- statistics and dynamics of compound climate extremes

Uppsala University Uppsala, Sweden

About the position

PhD student in meteorology- statistics and dynamics of compound climate extremes
Are you interested in working on the statistics and dynamics of compound climate extremes, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a doctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Earth Sciences
is Sweden´s most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. It offers a broad range of expertise that can contribute to solving important societal issues.
Earth is a dynamic and constantly changing planet. To understand how this planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of disciplines, including rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development.
Our research combines natural sciences and technology with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.
Our six research divisions:
Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Palaeobiology • Wind Energy
For more information see:
www.uu.se/earthsciences
The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at:
LUVAL.
You will work within the frame of the ERC grant ”DYnamical drivers, predictability and trends of compound CLimate EXtremes”
(DYCLEX)
.
Duties
The project focuses on quantitative analyses of mid-latitude compound climate extremes in recent and future climates. You will work on connecting atmospheric dynamics and circulation features to the occurrence of different surface compound extremes, and use this understanding to explore event predictability and long-term trends. Teaching/supervising duties up to 20% are possible on a voluntary basis. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and internationally.
Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must
hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in climate science, meteorology, statistics, physics or related topics, or
have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits in the above-mentioned subjects, or
have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
These requirements must be met at the time of admission to doctoral studies, but not at the time of application. We are looking for a doctoral candidate who has a strong self-drive, works independently and takes initiative. You should show a solid knowlegde of programming for data analysis and demonstrate excellent spoken and written communication skills in English. We further require good cooperation skills as the work involves collaborations with different research groups internationally.
Additional qualifications
Knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, a strong background in statistics and past experience of analysing large amounts of climate data and work on physical drivers of climate extremes are a merit. We also value positively experience in the non-academic sector.
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in
