About the position
Supervisors: Dr Stelios Rigopoulos, Dr Sebastian Eastham, Professor Marc Stettler
Start date: October 2027
Application deadline: 4 January 2027
Introduction:
The Brahmal Institute invites applications for its October 2027 Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Aviation (DPSA). Under the 2027 strategic theme “sustainability across stakeholders”, the cohort will undertake interdisciplinary research addressing aviation sustainability from a systems perspective, recognising the interconnected roles of airports, airlines, air traffic management, aircraft and passengers. Alongside their individual projects, students will benefit from shared learning, specialist training, networking and outreach, fostering collaboration to drive system-wide change towards more sustainable aviation.
Project overview:
Contrails are the biggest climate impact of aviation. In this project, we will employ advanced modelling methods to investigate the ice formation mechanisms of novel fuels and integrate these into global-scale contrail modelling. The research will assess whether alternatives to conventional jet fuel, including hydrogen and other emerging fuel concepts, could substantially reduce contrail formation. By addressing key uncertainties in aerosol microphysics, the project will determine whether disruptive fuels could profoundly change aviation’s climate impacts and potentially enable the elimination of contrails.
