About the position
Position Description The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in the research group of Prof. Ore Gottlieb. The successful candidate will pursue theoretical and computational research on compact objects and high-energy transients. Possible research topics include black hole and neutron star physics, collapsars and stellar explosions, compact-object mergers, gamma-ray bursts, nucleosynthesis, gravitational waves, and other multimessenger signatures of compact-object engines. Research in the group combines large-scale general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations with analytic modeling and predictions for multimessenger observables. The Postdoctoral Associate will have access to allocations on leadership-class high-performance computing facilities, freedom to develop independent projects aligned with the group’s broader interests, and opportunities to collaborate with students and researchers throughout MKI and MIT. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field by the start of the appointment. Candidates with backgrounds in numerical astrophysics, relativistic (magneto)hydrodynamics, radiation or neutrino transport, compact-object physics, stellar collapse, or related areas are particularly encouraged to apply. The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year. The anticipated start date is flexible within summer or fall 2027. The position is full-time and benefits-eligible. Applications received by December 4, 2026, will receive full consideration. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Questions about the scientific scope of the position may be directed to Prof. Ore Gottlieb at ogot@mit.edu. MIT is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from individuals from all identities and backgrounds. All qualified applicants will receive equitable consideration for employment based on their experience and qualifications and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, or national or ethnic origin. View MIT Policy on Non Discrimination and EEOC’s Know Your Rights. Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check, including possible verification of any findings of misconduct (or pending investigations) from prior employers.
