About the position
Position Description
Postdoctoral Position in Particle Theory, Nonperturbative Physics, Real-Time Dynamics, and Quantum Simulation
The Particle Theory Group at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position in particle theory, with an emphasis on nonperturbative quantum field theory, real-time dynamics, and connections to quantum information and quantum simulation.
The position is part of a collaborative research program bringing analytical field theory together with classical and quantum computational approaches to investigate the dynamics of interacting quantum fields. Scientific interests include strongly coupled gauge theories, confinement, symmetries and anomalies, and critical phenomena. The program emphasizes both using field-theoretic principles to guide calculations and developing computational approaches that reveal new nonperturbative physics.
We seek candidates with a strong foundation in quantum field theory, demonstrated research originality, and an interest in connecting theoretical ideas with concrete physical questions. We encourage applications from researchers across particle theory and phenomenology, formal and conformal field theory, lattice field theory, nuclear theory, quantum information, and quantum many-body physics.
Applicants with primarily analytical backgrounds, as well as those specializing in numerical or quantum-computational methods, are encouraged to apply. Expertise in real-time simulation, tensor networks, quantum algorithms, or related methods is welcome, but prior experience in real-time simulation or quantum computing is not a prerequisite. Candidates should be interested in engaging with the program’s combination of analytical and computational research and in developing new approaches beyond their existing expertise.
The successful candidate will contribute to the program’s research objectives and be encouraged to develop new directions that draw on their own scientific interests and strengths.
Applicants should hold a PhD in physics or a related field by the beginning of the appointment. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, publication list, research statement describing past work and future interests, and three letters of recommendation, submitted through AcademicJobsOnline.
Complete applications received by January 8, 2027 will receive full consideration. The anticipated start date is Fall 2027, although a start as early as Spring 2027 may be possible by mutual agreement. Late applications will be reviewed should the position remain open.
