About the position
Postdoctoral Research Scientist – Biomaterials and Biofabrication
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Professor Dame Molly Stevens's lab at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery and the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. The Stevens Group operates at the intersection of multiple disciplines, enabling highly collaborative and cross-field research. The lab is based at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Discovery and is strategically affiliated with the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, as well as the Institute of Biomedical Engineering within the Department of Engineering Science.
We are looking for a talented biomaterial scientist with broad expertise on the design and fabrication of advanced biomaterial for therapeutics and regenerative medicine applications. The role is highly multidisciplinary involving collaboration with researchers working within the fields of materials science, bioengineering, chemistry and biology. Successful candidates will engage with researchers both within the lab and across partner institutions, requiring strong organizational abilities and project management expertise to navigate complex, multi-team projects.
This post is available immediately for a fixed-term of 18 months, with the possibility of part-time appointments being considered.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and optimise micro-architectured constructs using state-of-the-art bioprinting techniques.
- Investigate how cells interact with biomaterials, including mechanobiological responses to physical and biochemical cues, and translate insights into improved material designs.
- Plan and perform cell culture experiments to evaluate the bio-material interfaces.
- Support the operation and management of shared biofabrication and synthesis facilities, providing training, technical expertise and guidance to other laboratory users as required.
Selection criteria:
- Hold, or be near to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in materials science, bioengineering or relevant field.
- Experience in the development of bioinks for fabrication of micro/nano-structured biomaterials.
- Experience in light-based 3D-bioprinting (e.g. SLA/DLP/nanoscribe).
- Experience in a wide range of material and biointerface characterisation techniques (including microscopy, spectroscopy, rheological and mechanical properties, cell assays, etc.)
- Strong background in cell culture and in vitro tissue development.
- Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations, with a proven track record of first author publications in peer reviewed journals.
What we offer:
- An excellent contributory pension scheme
- 38 days annual leave
