About the position
PRODiG+ Postdoctoral Fellowship in Music Composition and
Music-Creation Technologies
Category: Professional
Department: Music
Locations: Binghamton, NY
Position ID: 206354
Budget Title: Postdoctoral Associate (SL-1)
Salary: $80,000 (full-time, temporary)
The Music Department at Binghamton University (State University of
New York) is seeking applicants for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellow
through the SUNY's Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity,
Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODiG+) program with a specialization
in Music Composition and Music-Creation Technologies. The Fellow's
creative activities and research will cut across a range of genres
or media (e.g., digital production, music and generative AI,
concert music, film/theater/game music, popular forms,
collaborative arts, experimental forms, and/or arranging), and will
complement and expand the current curricular offerings in our
growing and dynamic composition/music-creation program.
Beginning Fall 2027, the fellowship has a teaching obligation of
one four-credit course (or an individual-lesson-based equivalent)
per year in digital-music creation/production or composition, and
the fellow will participate in programming and events related to
the Binghamton Center for New Music; it also comes with a highly
competitive compensation package.
The Fellow will join a vibrant creative and intellectual
environment. The Department of Music is home to the Binghamton
Center for New Music, which presents and hosts a wide range of
visiting artists and ensembles each year, and maintains a robust
series of collaborations across the arts and beyond. As a
constituent member of the School of the Arts, the Department of
Music features close ties with faculty and students from a number
of disciplines and provides a creative culture in which
collaborations across an R1 research university are deeply valued
and supported. The Fellow will be invited to curate new- and
digital-music events, as well as interact with graduate and
undergraduate students in composition and performance, and will be
actively supported by departmental and School of the Arts faculty,
a number of whom are likely to have overlapping creative/research
interests. The Music Department will strongly support the Fellow's
creative practice with the goal of converting their position to a
tenure-track assistant professorship at the conclusion of the
fellowship, provided that the Fellow meets all milestones.
The Binghamton University Music Department offers graduate and
undergraduate degrees, including the Master of Music degree with
emphasis in Composition, Conducting, History & Literature,
Instrumental Performance, and Vocal Performance; the Master of
Music in Opera, the Bachelor of Music in Performance, and the
Bachelor of Arts in Music. The department also serves students from
all majors across the university as part of Harpur College of Arts
and Sciences.
About the PRODiG+ Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This is a two-year fellowship. During this period, the fellow will
have a teaching load of one course per year and will be expected to
prioritize creative practice and professional development. The goal
is conversion to a tenure-track position in the Department of Music
at the completion of the fellowship. Following a successful
conversion to a tenure-track position, the teaching load would
expand to the department's standard teaching load of 2/2, which
also includes a lesson-based equivalency, as per standards set by
the National Association of Schools of Music.
The PRODiG+ Fellowship is designed with two primary goals: (1)
increasing the number and share of excellent and diverse faculty
committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and
inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pathway for retention and
support of these candidates. This Fellowship is for a 12-month
appointment for two years (AY27-AY29). The fellow will collaborate
with faculty members and receive enhanced support and mentorship.
