Background of the recruitment and description of the project The National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS) is an inter-university research institute in basic medicine dedicated to elucidating the fundamental mechanisms of human life phenomena. In this call for applications, we seek an outstanding researcher who tackles the fundamental principles of life within the broad framework of molecular and cellular physiology. Specifically, we expect candidates to pursue research characterized by both depth and breadth that extends beyond the analysis of isolated molecular structures or elementary processes, integrating biological phenomena across scales from molecules and cells to higher-order physiological functions. We warmly welcome applications from dynamic, early- to mid-career researchers—including overseas postdoctoral fellows aiming for independence—who possess a solid scholarly foundation resilient to transient technological trends while flexibly incorporating state-of-the-art approaches such as spatial omics and advanced data analytics, and who are capable of shaping the future of this field with a medium- to long-term vision. Candidates are expected to hold an internationally recognized record of excellence in the aforementioned field and possess a strong commitment to generating new synergies through active dialogue and collaboration with researchers across other divisions within the Institute. Work content and job description Upon appointment, the successful candidate will lead inter-university collaborative research projects—a central mission of NIPS—and actively contribute to graduate education as a faculty member at SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies). The initial laboratory infrastructure allocated upon arrival includes one Assistant Professor position, one position for either a Specially Appointed Assistant Professor or a Specially Appointed Researcher (NIPS Research Fellow), and one assigned NIPS technical staff member. Furthermore, an expansion of the laboratory infrastructure (such as the allocation of an additional faculty/staff position) will be considered based on outstanding research achievements and other relevant factors evaluated during the five-year term renewal review or related evaluations.
