About the position

Position Description

Postdoctoral position — quantum simulation and bosonic quantum information

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join us at the Laboratory for Theoretical and Computational Physics at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). The position concerns theoretical research at the interface of quantum information theory and quantum many-body physics, with applications to quantum simulation and quantum computing. Particular emphasis is placed on bosonic and hybrid qubit-boson systems and applications to quantum chemistry. Possible directions include developing resource-efficient quantum simulation methods, designing quantum learning and benchmarking protocols, and characterizing the capabilities and limitations of realistic quantum computing devices. The successful candidate will contribute to shaping the research direction and is encouraged to develop their own research profile within the project and beyond.

The position is part of the interdisciplinary Quantum molecular dynamics on complementary quantum hardware platforms project, a collaboration between PSI and ETH Zurich. The project brings together quantum information theory, theoretical chemistry, and experimental platforms based on trapped ions and superconducting quantum circuits to develop and benchmark methods for simulating molecular quantum dynamics. It offers opportunities for close collaboration with theoretical and experimental partners, with a particular focus on approaches combining qudits and bosonic degrees of freedom.

Candidates should hold a PhD in physics or a closely related field and have a strong background in quantum information theory, quantum many-body physics, quantum simulation, or related areas. Experience in bosonic or continuous-variable quantum information, quantum learning and benchmarking, or quantum chemistry is particularly welcome. Experience with analytical or numerical research methods, including scientific programming, is expected.

The position is initially for two years, with the option of an extension for a third year. Starting date is flexible (at the latest fall 2027).
