Assistant Professor or Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Functional Polymer Materials and Processing

About the position

In recent years, achieving carbon neutrality and a circular economy has become a major global challenge. In the fields of polymer and fiber materials, the development of sustainable material design and advanced material processing technologies has become an important research priority. In addition to advanced material processing technologies such as composite materials, functional films, nanofibers, and 3D printing, data-driven materials development utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation (DX) technologies has also been rapidly advancing.
Against this background, our Department of Advanced Fibro-Science seeks a young researcher who will conduct research and education on advanced functional materials for a sustainable society by promoting interdisciplinary research in material design, structural control, functional evaluation, and material processing based on polymer and fiber materials.

Work content and job description
Work in:
Conduct research and education on the development of advanced functional materials for a sustainable society based on advanced material processing technologies, and supervise undergraduate and graduate student research.
Subjects to be taught:
Graduate-level courses related to Fiber Materials Science in the Program of Advanced Fibro Science.

Work experience
Applicants should have expertise in the field of polymer and fiber materials and be capable of conducting research on material processing, including functional polymer materials, composite materials, functional films, nanofibers, and 3D printing, or on material design, structural control, and functional evaluation, with the aim of developing advanced functional materials that contribute to a sustainable society.
Applicants are also expected to have a strong interest in integrating artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation (DX), and data-driven materials development into their research, and to possess the ability, enthusiasm, and potential to actively promote education, research, international collaborative research, and academia–industry–government collaboration in cooperation with faculty members of the Program of Advanced Fibro Science.

Description
This position is part of KIT's initiative to promote diversity in faculty recruitment. Accordingly, applicants must be either female or non-Japanese nationals.

The tenure-track system is as follows;
Duration of Contract: 5-Year Tenure Track Program
Independent research will be supported during this tenure track program. Research space and a mentor will be provided.
Following successful appointment, annual, midterm and final reviews will be implemented to assess the possibility of tenure. A good result in the final review will lead to adoption as a tenured Associate Professor position. An excellent performance and the good progress of research plan in the midterm review may lead to assessment of the eligibility as a tenured Associate Professor position. A final review with a result of “not adopted” will result in termination of the appointment at the end of the contract.
In the event an appointee takes maternity leave, child-care leave or nursing leave during the tenure track program, a research assistant will be provided and the tenure track period will be extended.
Research Environment: The appointee will be provided with research space and a start-up research fund in the first year (3 million yen). Funding, based on an intramural standard, will be provided after the first year with a guarantee of 65% of the total hours of duty allotted for research throughout the duration of the tenure track position.
Final Review: The final review will be implemented during the first half of the fifth year of the contract, and passing the final review will lead to an associate professor appointment. The final review will be implemented to assess progress of the research plan, research achievements during this tenure track program, and the eligibility as a tenured Associate Professor position. This review will be based on the result of midterm, and latest annual reviews.
