Karolinska Institute Stockholm, Sweden

About the position

Research Assistant in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Flodström Tullberg group investigates the causes of type 1 diabetes and develops strategies for disease prevention. Our internationally recognized research combines innovative basic science with translational and clinical applications, providing an exceptional environment for scientific development and impact.

Your mission

The successful candidate will join ongoing efforts to advance our understanding of the early stages of type 1 diabetes, with a primary focus on identifying biomarkers and mechanisms that can improve disease prediction and enable preventative interventions. Research projects may also include investigations into the natural history of type 1 diabetes and the preclinical evaluation of novel therapeutic strategies. The candidate will play an active role in all aspects of the research process, including experimental design, laboratory investigations, data analysis, and the communication of findings through high-impact publications and scientific presentations. The position offers opportunities to engage in a dynamic international research environment through participation in group meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences, while also contributing to the supervision and mentoring of students within the laboratory.

Your profile

The applicant must hold a PhD in a relevant biomedical discipline and have demonstrated expertise in experimental studies of type 1 diabetes. Hands-on experience with experimental animal models of type 1 diabetes is required, including the design, execution, and analysis of in vivo studies.

The candidate must have experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomic analyses of plasma and extracellular vesicles, including sample preparation, data acquisition, bioinformatic analysis, interpretation of proteomic datasets, and integration with other biological data. Expertise in extracellular vesicle biology and characterization is highly desirable.

The applicant must also have documented experience in research on viruses.

In addition, the candidate should possess strong expertise in histological techniques, including tissue processing, sectioning, staining, microscopy, image analysis, and quantitative evaluation of tissues relevant to diabetes research.

Given the advanced and specialized nature of the projects, the successful candidate is expected to have sufficient prior experience to independently perform the majority of the experimental procedures and analyses with minimal training. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage complex research projects, analyze and interpret data, and communicate scientific findings through peer-reviewed publications is essential.
