Next Lives at the University of
Cincinnati
Founded in 1819, the University of Cincinnati ranks among
the nation’s best urban public research universities. Home to more
than 53,600 students, 12,000 faculty and staff, and over 360,000
living alumni, UC, a Carnegie 1 institution, combines research
prowess with a physical setting The New York Times has called “the
most ambitious campus design program in the country." UC's momentum
has never been stronger as the anchor of the Cincinnati Innovation
District, the oldest cooperative education (co-op) program in the
country with students earning $94 million annually through paid
experiences, an academic health system, and as a member of the Big
12 Conference. The university contributes $10.6 billion in economic
impact to the city and $22.7 billion to the state of Ohio. At UC,

Job Overview
As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the
UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class
health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures
and research that improves the health and clinical care of
patients.
A Research Scientist position is available in the
laboratory of Dr. Karthick Chella Krishnan (www.med.uc.edu/klab) in the
Department of Basic Biomedical Sciences, Division of Cardiovascular
Biology, Metabolism and Pharmacology, at the University of
Cincinnati College of Medicine. The K Lab conducts mechanistic
research at the intersection of mitochondrial biology, metabolism,
genetics, and sex differences, with projects spanning the liver,
adipose tissue, heart, and hippocampus.
The laboratory focuses on understanding how genetic
background and sex shape mitochondrial adaptation and dysfunction
and contribute to cardiometabolic disease. Current research areas
include mitochondrial subpopulations, sex-dependent metabolic
regulation, genetic determinants of mitochondrial function, and
organ-to-organ communication.
Essential Functions
- Perform in-depth studies of mitochondrial function and
metabolism using isolated liver mitochondria, primary or
immortalized liver cells, human iPSC-derived hepatic organoids, and
mouse models.
- Elucidate the molecular mechanisms regulating mitochondrial
function and metabolism in metabolic and cardiometabolic disease
using a combination of biochemical, molecular, cellular, and mouse
genetic approaches.
- The goal of this research is to understand how alterations in
mitochondrial function and metabolism contribute to disease
pathogenesis and to identify mechanisms that may provide new
insights into therapeutic approaches for the improvement of human
health.
Daily tasks will include:
- Independently designing and conducting research as required by
the faculty supervisor and in accordance with all institutional and
federal regulations;
- Modifying and adapting experimental protocols (i.e.,
troubleshooting), techniques and procedures to address
project-specific experimental challenges and requirements;
- Supporting the development of proposals and writing
research-related funding and grants;
- Analyzing and interpreting data, preparing research results and
written summaries in manuscript form for publications and in
graphics form for presentation at research meetings and for grant
proposals;
- Independently writing manuscripts and engaging in the
dissemination of research findings;
- Contributing to a collaborative laboratory environment by
training and mentoring student researchers in research methods and
laboratory procedures;
- Maintaining and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory
protocols, laboratory records, and institutional requirements;
- Undergoing training in and developing proficiency with
mitochondrial physiology, cellular and molecular biology
techniques, metabolic phenotyping, laboratory instrumentation, and
data analysis relevant to the laboratory's research projects.
Required Education
- PhD in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or related
field.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Office environment/no specific unusual physical or
environmental demands.
