About the Theory of Superconducting Quantum Devices group

Led by Alexandre Blais, the Theory of Superconducting Quantum Devices group specializes in quantum computing and quantum optics in circuit QED. Areas of interest include superconducting quantum circuits, circuit QED, quantum error correction, microwave quantum optics, and the application of machine learning to quantum systems.

As a member of the group, you will join a close-knit community collaborating with leading academic and industrial partners worldwide, with opportunities to participate, e.g., in the Quantum Science Accelerator, a US Department of Energy funded research network bringing together 25 partner institutions.

Job description

Role: We are looking for a research scientist to serve as a long-term scientific and technical resource within the group. You will carry out original research in quantum information science while helping maintain continuity across projects and supporting the development of students and researchers. Key responsibilities include:

  • providing technical oversight across projects, helping troubleshoot challenges and connecting researchers working on related topics;
  • ensuring continuity by guiding students and postdocs to properly document, organize, and make their codes, algorithms, data, and other research resources accessible to the group before they leave
  • onboarding and mentoring newer group members, sharing the group's methods, tools, and best practices;
  • contributing to a collaborative research environment and exchanging ideas with students, postdocs, and external collaborators;
  • reviewing papers, theses, and other scientific work before submission or final review;
  • leading the preparation of selected grant applications and contributing to project planning and management;
  • supporting selected administrative and organizational activities related to research, including reporting and scientific planning.

Salary: Based on the Université de Sherbrooke’s applicable salary scale (APAPUS), including applicable benefits.

Location : Located in Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada, the Institut quantique (IQ) at the Université de Sherbrooke is a collaborative environment with over 300 students, postdocs and faculty members advancing the fields of quantum information science, quantum engineering and quantum materials. Inaugurated in 2022, IQ's modern and architecturally unique building offers an array of collaborative spaces to inspire creativity and innovation. In addition, located in proximity to IQ is DistriQ, a quantum startup hub with companies such as 1Qbit, Equal1, Irreversible, NanoAcademic, Nord Quantique, Pasqal, and SBQuantum.

Located in the heart of Sherbrooke, a thriving urban area (population: 225 000) in the Appalachian range, you will enjoy the perfect balance of city amenities and peaceful surroundings. According to Maclean’s magazine, Sherbrooke is one of the best places to live in Canada. Sherbrooke's human-scale campus and welcoming community provide the ideal backdrop for your journey. The Université de Sherbrooke is amongst the top universities for quantum research in Canada and is only 150 km away from Montreal, a vibrant city with an international airport and excellent flight connections to Europe, USA and South America.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher who can work independently while actively supporting and collaborating with others. The ideal candidate combines strong research and problem-solving skills with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and is comfortable mentoring students and contributing beyond their own projects. Candidates whose background does not exactly match our research interests are encouraged to apply: we value diverse perspectives and the unique contributions they can bring. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.

To apply

Submit via AJO a statement of interest, a short description of planned research, a description of past mentoring experience, and a CV including a list of publications. Please also arrange for at least two reference letters to be sent in support of your application. Apply before November 1, 2026 for full consideration; applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
