About the position

Researcher in Computational Magnetism and Spintronics

The School of Engineering Sciences at KTH is seeking a researcher in theoretical and computational magnetism and spintronics. The position is placed in an internationally prominent research group at the AlbaNova University Center, studying magnetic materials and spin phenomena using advanced computational methods.

You will conduct research on magnetic and spintronic phenomena in quantum materials and low-dimensional systems, for example spin and magnon transport, fundamental magnetic interactions, and topological spin textures in two-dimensional magnets, antiferromagnets and altermagnets. The work includes the development and application of first-principles calculations, atomistic spin dynamics and micromagnetic simulations, as well as the development of automated and AI-assisted computational workflows for large-scale materials studies.

The duties also include supervising doctoral students and postdocs, collaborating with experimental and theoretical research groups in Sweden and internationally, actively seeking external research funding, and contributing to the scientific environment of the group and the department. Some teaching and pedagogical qualification may be included in the duties.

Requirements:

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree
  • Documented research expertise in theoretical or computational condensed matter physics with a focus on magnetism and spintronics, demonstrated through publications in leading international scientific journals.
  • Extensive experience of electronic structure calculations (first principles/DFT) and of simulating magnetic materials and their properties.
  • Excellent command of English, spoken and written, as the work is carried out in an international research environment.

As a person, you are independent and driven, and you have excellent collaborative abilities.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Documented experience of research on fundamental magnetic interactions, for example the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, magnetic anisotropy and exchange interactions, and their role in topological magnetism.
  • Experience of studies of spin and magnon transport in two-dimensional magnets, van der Waals materials, antiferromagnets or altermagnets.
  • Experience of atomistic spin dynamics and micromagnetic simulations.
  • Experience of machine learning/AI and of developing automated workflows for large-scale calculations on high-performance computing resources.
  • A documented ability to attract external research funding in competition, as well as scientific prizes and awards.
  • Teaching ability and experience of supervising doctoral students or postdocs.
  • The ability to work towards research results being utilised in practice and to inform about research and development work.
  • Experience of developing and leading activities and staff.
  • Knowledge of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a specific focus on gender equality.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
