About the position
We are developing a tailored plant breeding technology that precisely controls the type, energy, and number of heavy ions to induce mutations specific to target genes or chromosomal regions. Furthermore, we are analyzing the relationship between chromosome rearrangements induced by heavy ions and epigenetic changes, with the aim of understanding genomic functions and phenotypic changes. In addition, through functional analyses of genes identified using mutants, we conduct basic research on fundamental biological processes, including plant sex determination and sex chromosome evolution. Building on the track record of plant breeding achievements cultivated in our laboratory, we aim to establish new breeding principles by fostering a dynamic exchange between basic research and applied breeding.

Work content and job description
The successful candidate will conduct research on plant sex determination and sex chromosome evolution using the dioecious plant Silene latifolia, as part of the Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Research Areas (A), “Sex Chromosome Cycle.” The primary focus will be the functional characterization of genes involved in sex determination. Molecular genetic analyses, gene expression analyses, genomic analyses, and related approaches will be used to elucidate the functions of sex-determining genes on the sex chromosomes and their roles in sex chromosome evolution.
This research will be conducted as part of the basic research activities of the Ion Beam Breeding Group, which aim to understand the relationships among genes, chromosomes, and phenotypes through mutation-based approaches. The successful candidate will also collaborate with researchers participating in the “Sex Chromosome Cycle” research area to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of plant sex determination and sex chromosome evolution.
The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.
