Tenure Track Faculty in Applied Biological Chemistry

At Shizuoka University, by providing incentives to young faculty members to obtain tenure, we aim to increase the faculty's motivation for education and research, improve their abilities and qualifications, and thereby advance and revitalize education and research. For this purpose, we have introduced a tenure track system. The term of office for tenure-track faculty members is five years, but early promotion to a tenured post at our university is possible if their research achievements are recognized as excellent. Tenure-track faculty members are primarily responsible for research work, but they also receive training to become future tenured faculty members who will be responsible for the education of students at our university. Shizuoka University employs foreign faculty members (those with nationalities other than Japanese) in an effort to advance internationalization in both education and research. Shizuoka University also promotes gender equality and promotes equal employment opportunities.

Work content and job description
Applicants must have a doctoral degree and have excellent research achievements in a research field related to applied biological chemistry, particularly involving microorganisms or plants. We are looking for a young female researcher who can teach specialized subjects (e.g.Biotechnology and related subjects) in the Faculty of Global Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation and Graduate School, and who can enthusiastically educate students, including through the graduation research.

Description
(1) Female researcher. (Shizuoka University is working to increase the ratio of female faculty members based on the basic policy of the Shizuoka University Gender Equality Charter, and in accordance with Article 8 of the Act on Ensuring Equal Opportunities and Treatment between Men and Women in the Employment Field, we are conducting an open recruitment of Female Only.)
(2) Those who currently hold a doctoral degree in the field of applied biological chemistry or have research achievements equivalent to or exceeding those of a doctoral degree holder.
(3) Those who, in accordance with the educational philosophy of the Faculty of Global Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, have a global outlook, are motivated to engage in education and research through co-creation with researchers from other disciplines, and possess the communication skills needed to work effectively with others in university and faculty administration and related duties.
(4) Those who can apply their specialized expertise to advance research in the circular bioeconomy through interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation.
(5) Those who can teach the subjects listed above.
(6) Those who are motivated to devote themselves to teaching and mentoring students.

1) Allowances, including those for dependents, management, housing, commutation, special work, overtime work, and midnight work will be provided in accordance with the Shizuoka University guidelines.
2) Relocation expenses will be covered following the Shizuoka University guidelines.

Supplementary explanation of compensation
■Assessment of Tenure track Position
The performance of the tenure track position holder will be evaluated regularly. The assessment includes multi-evaluations of her capabilities in scientific research, leadership and management, acquisition of competitive research funding, providing teaching and tutorship for Bachelor/Master course students, and presentation skills in English. The assessment will take into account the original research plan, mid-term and final research goals submitted at the start of employment, and results of interviews. The assessment will be scheduled as follows:
1) The yearly evaluation will take place at the end of the first, second, and fourth years.
2) An interim assessment will be conducted within the month following the expiry of two and a half years since the start of employment.
3) The final assessment will be conducted within the month following the expiry of four and a half years since the start of employment.
*Successful assistant professor will be promoted to a lecturer or associate professor (acquire tenure until the retirement age (currently 65 years old)).
■Research Support
1) During the first year, a start-up fund of 3,500,000 yen and an independent research space will be provided. During the second year, research fund of 1,400,000 yen will be provided. During the third, fourth and fifth years, research fund of 700,000 yen per annum will be provided The amounts are based on the FY2025 rates and are subject to change in the future).
2) The successful candidate shall research under the guidance of a mentor/research advisor.
3) It is possible that a research fund may be changed by the situation of a future budget.
■Primary Responsibility
In addition to research on a special field, support for the subjects on the seminar / experimental work/lecture for the students is obligated.
Approximately 70% of efforts during the period of employment will be focused on research.

Shizuoka University will check the history of disciplinary actions taken against students for harassment and sexual violence, etc. Therefore, in the 'Awards, punishments, disciplinary actions, etc.' section of the CV, be sure to enter not only criminal penalties but also the details of any disciplinary action taken in the past for sexual violence, including sexual harassment, and the specific reasons for such action. Selection
Following document screening, applicants deemed qualified will, in principle, be invited to an in-person interview.
Applicants must bear their own travel expenses for the interview.
At the interview, applicants will be asked to present their research in their field of specialization and deliver a mock lecture.
To promote internationalization in both education and research, when candidates are equally qualified, preference will be given to candidates who have sufficient Japanese proficiency to perform teaching and administrative duties and who are either foreign nationals or holders of degrees obtained outside Japan.
When evaluating research achievements, periods of interrupted research due to maternity or childcare leave will be taken into consideration upon the applicant’s request.
