About the position
The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) seeks a Staff Scientist (Contractor) to join the Laboratory of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases within the Cardiovascular Branch of the NHLBI: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/research/intramural/researchers/pi/cao-haiming. The laboratory investigates the molecular and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases, with particular emphasis on obesity, diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). In recent years, the laboratory has developed integrated experimental and computational approaches to identify disease-associated human long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and has defined their functional roles in metabolic homeostasis using mouse and humanized-mouse models. More recently, the laboratory demonstrated that short functional motifs derived from human lncRNAs have strong potential as RNA therapeutic candidates. Ongoing translational studies are focused on advancing these motifs toward the development of RNA-based therapies for metabolic diseases. The laboratory is supported by state-of-the-art core facilities for transgenic mouse models, human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) research, high-throughput sequencing, advanced microscopy, animal surgery, and bioinformatics, and has direct access to high-performance computing resources for biomedical research.
The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- A doctoral degree in biological, biomedical, or a closely related scientific field
- Postdoctoral research experience and a strong record of peer-reviewed publications
- Strong expertise in mammalian physiology and in vivo mouse models of metabolic disease, including metabolic phenotyping and molecular and cellular analyses of relevant pathways
- Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: RNA biology, liver biology and pathophysiology, RNA therapeutic development, bioinformatics, and applications of artificial intelligence in biomedical research
- Ability to support the technical and scientific operations of the laboratory, including experimental planning, coordination, and troubleshooting
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to serve as a positive role model for junior fellows and trainees
Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments and starts at a minimum of $125,845. Appointees may be a US citizen, Legal Permanent Resident or non-US citizen who are eligible for a valid work authorization. This position is subject to background investigation.
Applications from women, minorities and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged. Applicants should submit the following: cover letter highlighting key qualifications and scientific achievements; current curriculum vitae with complete bibliography; and three letters of reference (via email only) to Maria G. Stoltzfus, gonzamar@mail.nih.gov
The review of applications will begin on rolling basis as complete application packages are submitted. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
