About the position

Faculty of Social Sciences, Nord University, Norway, invites applications from outstanding candidates for 1-2 temporary 100 % PhD positions in Social Science, with a specialization in technology and new forms of organization and leadership. The position will be affiliated with the Research Group for Society, Organization, Leadership, and Working Life (SOLA) and with the specialization Governance and Democracy in Transition within the PhD programme.

Applicants are expected to develop an independent project proposal within the thematic framework of technology and new forms of organization and leadership. We invite applicants who are interested in exploring and designing their own projects focusing on the role and implications of technology in organizations. Technologies such as software and robots do not operate in isolation; rather, they form part of dynamic processes in which routines, decisions and working methods are continually developed, negotiated and adapted. This creates new demands on management and opens different ways of organizing work. We welcome project proposals employing quantitative or qualitative methods.

Examples of relevant research topics include:

  • How organizational practices and forms of management evolve and are challenged through the use of technology
  • How technology creates new conditions for the exercise, negotiation and legitimization of management
  • How professional norms and autonomy are negotiated in the face of new technology
  • How technology plays a role in knowledge work and knowledge production

The appointment period is normally three years, without mandatory work duties beyond the PhD project. However, there is also the possibility of a four-year appointment, including 25 % career-promoting duties. Such duties may involve teaching and/or research-related tasks at the faculty, depending on the candidate's qualifications and the faculty's needs.

The position is based in Bodø or Levanger, and presence at the workplace during working hours is expected as a general rule. In the case of career-promoting activities, the position may also involve duties at Nord University’s other campuses.

The appointment applies from 1 September 2027, or from another agreed start date.
