The Ohio State University

Columbus, OH

Position Overview

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) (https://ece.osu.edu/) at The Ohio State University invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, with one position in each of the following two areas: 1) AI algorithmic foundations and methodologies and 2) Agentic AI foundations and methodologies. Candidates with expertise in the associated topics within these areas are welcome to apply. All applicants are strongly encouraged to indicate their preferred area of consideration in their cover letter, even if the applicants whose expertise span both areas.

  • AI Algorithmic Foundations and Methodologies: Advancing the foundations, algorithms, and methodologies of next-generation AI systems, with an emphasis on analyzing and designing novel models and learning paradigms to address emerging challenges across AI applications, as well as rigorous theoretical frameworks for understanding, analyzing, and guiding their behavior, performance, and reliability. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, theoretical and algorithmic foundations for i) deep learning, ii) foundation and world models, iii) generative AI, iv) model and inference efficiency, v) reinforcement learning, vi) optimization for AI, and vii) statistical learning.
  • Agentic AI Foundations and Methodologies: Developing the foundations, architectures, and methodologies for autonomous AI agents capable of reasoning, learning, planning, and acting effectively in complex, dynamic, and interactive environments. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, planning, reasoning, decision-making, and adaptation in agentic environments, world-model-based agentic AI, cognitive science–inspired agentic architectures, coordination, collaboration, and mechanism design in multi-agent systems.

Candidates are encouraged to leverage their expertise in Artificial Intelligence to complement and expand the core research areas of the ECE department, including computer networks and communication, control and signal processing, circuits, power and energy, solid-state electronics, photonics, and electromagnetics (https://ece.osu.edu/graduate-research-areas).
