About the position
Tenure-track Assistant Professor - Civil and Environmental
Engineering
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Cambridge, MA
Full Time
The MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in
Cambridge, MA invites applications for tenure-track faculty
positions at the level of Assistant Professor to begin July 1,
2027, or on a mutually agreed date thereafter.
We seek candidates who will help define the next generation of
mechanics, materials, the AI-native engineering of real-world
physical systems, and how they connect with the future of
infrastructure and the built environment. We are particularly
interested in researchers who combine strong foundations in
mechanics, materials, and physical modeling with modern
computational and data-driven approaches, and who can create new
engineering capabilities for infrastructure and physical systems
that sense, learn, adapt, and interact with their
environment.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: physics-grounded
AI for materials and mechanics; multiscale, multiphysics mechanics,
including coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior, fracture,
damage, instability, localization, and heterogeneous materials;
geomechanics and the mechanics of infrastructure and
energy-transition systems; decentralized intelligence in physical
systems, including embedded sensing, inference, control,
bio-inspired engineering, living materials, and self-healing
systems; and mechanics for climate resilience, resource
sustainability, and the energy transition.
We are especially interested in candidates developing new materials
and mechanics systems for infrastructure beyond 2050, including
complex, adaptive, heterogeneous systems whose behavior emerges
across scales and for which classical closed-form models are
insufficient while physics remains essential for trustworthy
prediction. Applications may include materials and systems for
extreme environments such as data centers, nuclear reactors, and
emerging geothermal systems, as well as living infrastructure and
approaches to mitigating infrastructure aging.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in
original research that advances knowledge in one or more core areas
of Civil and Environmental Engineering and will contribute to the
Department's programs in materials, mechanics, infrastructure,
climate resilience, and energy transition. Faculty responsibilities
include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advising
students, conducting original scholarly research, developing new
and innovative teaching materials, and participating in the
intellectual life of the Department.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental
Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, or a related science or engineering discipline by the
beginning of employment. Candidates from adjacent fields whose work
makes a strong contribution to the mechanics and materials
challenges of civil and environmental engineering are encouraged to
apply.
The pay range for a 9-month academic appointment at the entry-level
Assistant Professor rank (excluding summer salary): $143,000 -
$147,000. The pay offered to a selected candidate during hiring
will be based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and
responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience
and education/training, internal peer equity, and applicable legal
requirements. This pay range represents base pay only and does not
include any other benefits or compensation. Employment is
contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check,
including possible verification of any findings of misconduct or
pending investigations from prior employers.
Applications should include: (a) curriculum vitae, (b) a research
statement, (c) a teaching and mentoring plan, and (d) the names and
contact information of 3 reference letter writers, who should
upload their letters of recommendation by the application
deadline.
Please submit online applications to https://faculty-searches.mit.edu/cee/.
Contact one@mit.edu with questions. To receive full consideration,
completed applications should be submitted by December 1,
2026.
