Background of the recruitment and description of the project Meiji Gakuin is a private university based on Christian principles, founded in 1863. It has two campuses, in Shirokane, Tokyo, and in Totsuka, Yokohama. The Department of Global and Transcultural Studies is based on the Totsuka campus. It was founded in 2011 and is the only department in the university that conducts classes entirely in English. A vacancy has arisen for an adjunct lecturer to teach two courses: “Introduction to Sociology A” and “Introduction to Sociology B.” These courses are in our Lower Division, and both involve teaching one 100-minute class a week, in English, to Meiji Gakuin students. The successful applicant can teach them both in one semester during the 2027 academic year, or they can teach one course in the spring and fall semesters. (The spring semester starts in April 2027 and ends in July 2027; the fall semester starts in the third week of September 2027 and ends in January 2028.) The semester(s), and day of the week are negotiable within the constraints of the overall timetable. These courses are primarily for our first- and second-year students. They have required Academic English Program courses in the morning; hence we prefer that these classes are taught in the afternoon. The appointed adjunct can plan and teach “Introduction A” and “B” as separate classes with distinct contents, or if they opt to teach both in one semester, they may link them to create a combined class that meets twice a week. The Department is also searching for an adjunct to teach an Upper-Division course entitled “Gender and Society.” Applicants who meet the qualifications for that course may apply for both positions. This appointment is a temporary replacement hire for a retiring faculty member, and it will only be for the 2027 academic year. Work content and job description Teaching one 100-minute class a week each in the spring and fall semesters of academic year 2027 (April to July 2027 and September 2027 to January 2028), or two classes a week in one of the two semesters. Lesson preparation, delivery and grading. Work experience Previous university-level teaching experience is preferred but not essential. Official qualification in specific field, etc. Proof of academic qualifications can be submitted at the final selection stage. Various systems Transportation expenses : Travel expenses will be paid for a distance of up to 110 kilometers from the Totsuka campus. Measures for preventing passive smoking at the workplace Smoking is prohibited throughout the campus except in two specified areas well away from the main teaching and research areas, so there is no risk of second-hand smoking. Persons with disabilities We welcome applications from people with disabilities. Most of the campus is fully wheelchair-accessible, including all areas where the candidate will require access. We have two wheelchair-accessible toilets and some braille signage for the visually impaired. Others There is no point applying for this position unless you will DEFINITELY be living within commuting distance of the Totsuka campus from the start of April 2027 to the end of January 2028, the summer holiday excepted, if teaching one class each in spring and fall. If teaching two classes in spring: April to July 2027; if teaching 2 classes in fall, September 2027 to January 2028. Job content supplemental explanation The employment and start dates listed here are based on the assumption that the successful candidate will teach in the spring semester of 2027. If the two courses are both taught in the fall semester, employment and start date would both be September 21.
