About the position
Department: Electrical and Computer
EngineeringSalary: Commensurate with Experience
Description:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the
University of Houston (UH) invites applications for a
tenure-track/tenure-eligible faculty position in AI-Enabled
Implantable and Wearable Systems for Closed-Loop Precision Health
at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. The successful
candidate will be appointed at the Assistant Professor
(tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenure-eligible) rank, based
on experience and qualifications.
The tenure home will be in ECE, with opportunities for
collaborative appointments and research partnerships with the
Department of Health and Human Performance in the College of
Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Department of Pharmacological
and Pharmaceutical Sciences in the College of Pharmacy, and the
Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine.
This position seeks an emerging research leader working at the
intersection of implantable and wearable medical devices,
bioelectronics, biomedical sensing, artificial intelligence,
digital health, and precision therapeutics. Of particular interest
are candidates developing systems that enable continuous
acquisition of physiological, biochemical, biomechanical, or
optical data and integrate these measurements with AI-guided
analysis, therapeutic intervention, and assessment of biological
response.
A central research opportunity is the development of closed-loop
precision health systems that integrate data acquisition, AI
analysis, treatment decision, biological response assessment, and
treatment optimization. The successful candidate is expected to
develop innovative implantable and wearable bioelectronic platforms
and collaborate with investigators in human health, pharmacology,
and medicine to connect continuous sensing data with therapeutic
interventions, molecular biomarkers, pharmacological response, and
treatment-induced gene-expression changes.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish an
internationally recognized, externally funded research program;
develop interdisciplinary collaborations across UH; pursue large
multi-investigator and center-scale research opportunities; teach
undergraduate and graduate courses; mentor graduate and
undergraduate students; and contribute to the educational and
research missions of the department and university. The research
area has a broad and diversified funding ecosystem, including
opportunities through NIH, NSF, ARPA-H, DoD, CPRIT, DPRIT, medical
device companies, healthcare systems, translational research
programs, and private foundations.
Relevant research areas may include, but are not limited to:
- Implantable and wearable medical devices
- Soft, flexible, and biointegrated electronics
- Biomedical sensors and instrumentation
- AI and machine learning for healthcare
- Agentic AI for adaptive health systems
- Closed-loop therapeutic and neuromodulation systems
- Physiological and biochemical monitoring
- Multimodal biomedical data analytics
- Digital biomarkers and precision medicine
- Federated and privacy-preserving machine learning
- Wireless and low-power biomedical systems
- Translational medical device technologies
The University of Houston is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public
research university located in one of the nation's largest
metropolitan areas. ECE maintains a strong and growing research
portfolio, extensive interdisciplinary collaborations, and a strong
record of graduate education, research translation, and industry
engagement.
UH is located in Houston, the fourth largest city in the United
States, with access to a major industrial base, the Texas Medical
Center, NASA, and a broad technology and innovation ecosystem.
Houston offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary
research, industry collaboration, commercialization, and workforce
development.
The department seeks outstanding candidates with the potential for
exceptional research, excellence in teaching, and effective
mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2027, or as negotiated
Qualifications
Applicants must possess an earned doctorate in electrical
engineering, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, computer
science, or another closely related field at the time of
appointment.
Candidates should demonstrate strong potential for developing an
externally funded, internationally recognized research program and
for effective collaboration across disciplinary boundaries.
For appointment at the Associate Professor level, candidates should
have a demonstrated record of research excellence, external
funding, scholarly impact, teaching, and professional leadership
commensurate with appointment at that rank.
Preference may be given to candidates who have demonstrated success
in securing competitive research support, including NIH K99/R00,
NSF CAREER, DoD Young Investigator, or comparable early-career or
independent research funding.
Required Attachments by Candidate:
1. Cover Letter / Letter of Application
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Research Statement
4. Teaching Philosophy or Statement
5. Statement describing the candidate's vision for
interdisciplinary collaboration
6. Names and contact information for professional references
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until
the position is filled. Should listed references be contacted, they
will be asked to submit letters of recommendation.
Employees are expected to have a home address in the state of
Texas for the duration of their appointments.
