About the position
Job Description
Classical Hematologist (03-309-1215) The University of Maryland
School of Medicine (UMSOM) and the University of Maryland Marlene
and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) in
Baltimore invite applications for a full-time faculty position in
Classical Hematology. This is an opportunity to join and help shape
a growing academic classical hematology program, with particular
opportunities in red blood cell and iron disorders, sickle cell
disease, thrombosis/hemostasis, and other non-malignant hematologic
conditions. We are seeking a hematologist who combines outstanding
clinical care with a strong interest in translational and/or
clinical research and who wants to build a distinctive area of
clinical and scholarly expertise.
A major area of institutional investment is sickle cell disease.
UMMC provides comprehensive adult sickle cell care that includes
disease-modifying therapy, red blood cell exchange, same-day
infusion services, allogeneic stem cell transplantation, clinical
trials, and FDA-approved gene therapy. In April 2026, UMMC treated
the first adult in Maryland to receive an FDA-approved sickle cell
gene therapy. The program is now focused on expanding access across
Maryland, strengthening coordination across outpatient, acute-care,
transfusion, and cellular-therapy settings, and developing a
sustainable regional model of care. With more than 5,000 people
living with sickle cell disease in Maryland, this work offers an
exceptional opportunity for meaningful clinical impact, program
development, and patient-centered research.
The University of Maryland brings internationally recognized, and
in several areas world-leading, expertise across multiple fields
central to classical hematology. These strengths include iron and
heme biology, red blood cell biology and physiology, hemoglobin
biology, oxygen transport, transfusion science, and the development
of therapies for disorders of the blood. The institution also has
deep and rapidly growing expertise in hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation and cellular therapy, including gene- and
cell-based approaches for inherited blood disorders. Together,
these programs create an unusually rich environment for a classical
hematologist to work across the full spectrum from fundamental
biology to clinical translation and advanced therapeutics. The
successful candidate will have opportunities to develop
collaborative clinical and research programs in red cell and iron
disorders, hemoglobinopathies, transfusion-related complications,
and other areas of classical hematology while contributing to the
continued growth of these institutional strengths.
Clinical and translational research is supported by UMGCCC Shared
Services within the Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources
(CIBR), the UMGCCC Clinical Research Office, and the broader
University of Maryland, Baltimore research environment. Faculty can
collaborate with internationally recognized investigators in red
cell and iron biology, transfusion science, vascular biology,
critical care, engineering, stem cell transplantation, cellular
therapy, and clinical investigation. These areas are undergoing
substantial institutional growth, creating opportunities to build
new programs, develop investigator-initiated studies and clinical
trials, and move discoveries from basic mechanisms to new
diagnostics, therapeutics, gene and cell therapies, and models of
care.
The expected salary range for Assistant Professors is $200,000
(min) and $425,703 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base
