About the position
Position Description The Duke University Department of Biomedical Engineering (Duke BME) in the Pratt School of Engineering is seeking applicants for an Assistant Research Professor faculty position in the computational analysis of granular biomaterials. Early career researchers doing innovative work in all areas of the computational analysis of granular biomaterials are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will lead a research and training program within the Duke Materials in Medicine Center (MIMC) that develops computational methods and data resources linking the microstructure of granular biomaterial scaffolds to biological outcomes. Areas of interest include three-dimensional image analysis and segmentation of scaffolds and cells; quantitative description of pore geometry, connectivity, and ligand presentation in packed-particle materials; research software and relational database development for biomaterials data; and the integration of material microstructure with cellular, phenotypic, and genomic measurements, including through Duke's participation in the NSF Center for Genome Intelligence Engineering (GENIE). The Assistant Research Professor will develop and lead the computational and data activities of MIMC, including the extension of the Center's software and database into a biologically connected resource; secure and maintain external research funding, including as Principal Investigator; publish in leading peer-reviewed journals and present at venues relevant to the field; co-advise and mentor graduate students and other trainees; coordinate computational activities across MIMC, GENIE, and Duke research testbeds; and contribute to departmental service, such as serving on graduate student exam committees. This is a 12-month, regular-rank research faculty appointment (not tenure-track), with an initial term of three years and an anticipated start date of January 1, 2027. Consistent with the Pratt School of Engineering guidelines for research faculty, salary is supported primarily by external sponsored research funding, and the Assistant Research Professor works in collaboration with a tenured faculty sponsor, with whom graduate students are co-advised. Candidates should have a record of first-author peer-reviewed publications in computational or quantitative analysis of biomaterials. In addition, desired qualifications include expertise in computational geometry, graph-based methods, and image analysis applied to the three-dimensional microstructure of granular or porous biomaterials, such as granular hydrogels and microporous annealed particle (MAP) scaffolds; experience developing research software and relational databases for biomaterials data; clinical training, such as an M.D., that supports connecting material descriptors to biologically and clinically meaningful outcomes; a record of mentoring students and trainees; experience leading or coordinating the activities of a multidisciplinary research center; and experience with technology transfer, such as patents or software licensing. Information on the cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research and teaching in Duke BME can be found at https://bme.duke.edu/. Duke BME is a driving force in creating engineering knowledge and novel biomedical technology that improve the human condition through the advancement of clinical care and biomedical science. The Department is within walking distance of Duke University School of Medicine and Duke University Hospital, and we work closely with medical professionals to identify important clinical problems that impact human health and solve them using our technical expertise. Interested candidates should submit the following by October 15, 2026: · cover letter (with contact information); · curriculum vitae; · research statement (no more than 3 pages) that includes a description of past research accomplishments, plans for future research, and description of past experiences demonstrating your commitment to community building and outreach; · mentoring statement (no more than 3 pages) describing mentoring philosophy, previous experiences, future plans for mentoring, and description of past experiences promoting and supporting a community building and outreach; and · list of three references who will provide letters on behalf of the candidate; note, letters will not be requested until after the first round of application evaluations. Applicants should have an earned doctorate in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, materials science, applied mathematics, computational science, or a related field. Applicants must apply through Academic Jobs Online https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32959. Review of applications will begin immediately; applications will be accepted until October 15, 2026.
