About the position
Position Description The C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP, https://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/itp/www/ ) at Stony Brook University anticipates filling one or more postdoctoral research appointments in theoretical physics, with an approximate start date of September 1, 2027. Appointments are for two years, renewable for a third year, subject to the availability of funds. Research directions include (but not limited to) topological phases of matter and their realizations on quantum devices, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation, non- equilibrium quantum dynamics, and generalized symmetries. Exceptional applicants may be qualified for a postdoctoral fellowship within the Simons Targeted Research Group on the Non-Equilibrium Frontier. The Fellowship will support an outstanding early-career scientist pursuing research in theoretical condensed matter and theoretical quantum information science (see note below). Required Qualifications: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree or foreign equivalent in theoretical physics or closely related field, with a record of independent research. Local position titles and salaries will depend on experience. Preferred Qualifications: Research experience in one or more of the subfields described above. Brief Description of Duties: The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research in theoretical physics. The researcher may collaborate with senior and junior members of the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, as well as members of other research institutes, and may travel for research purposes. The Institute has a tradition of collaboration with the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and of Mathematics and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook and with Brookhaven National Laboratory. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names, institutions and email addresses of three references who will submit their letters electronically at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32928 Review of applications will begin Nov 16th, 2026, and continue until the positions are filled. Application Materials Required: Upload the following items online at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32928 to complete application: - Cover Letter - Curriculum Vitae - Research Statement - Three Reference Letters (to be submitted by the reference writers at this site ) Note: The Simons Targeted Research Group on the Non-Equilibrium Frontier studies quantum matter driven far from equilibrium. The collaboration's work spans the mathematical foundations of quantum dynamics, the classification of intrinsically dynamical phases of matter, the characterization of fault-tolerant quantum computation as a non-equilibrium phase, and the nature of complexity in evolving quantum systems. The Fellow will be a full member within the Simons Targeted Research Group and is encouraged to work with any of its groups, including affiliated members. They will benefit from the collaboration's regular meetings, schools, and visitor exchanges, which connect the participating institutions into a single research program. Cross- institutional collaboration is actively encouraged. Stony Brook University is committed to excellence in diversity and the creation of an inclusive learning, and working environment. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status and all other protected classes under federal or state laws.
