About the position
Regenstrief Institute
Chief Research Officer
Regenstrief Institute invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chief Research Officer. Founded more than 50 years ago, Regenstrief Institute is an internationally recognized research organization dedicated to improving health and healthcare through rigorous, innovative, and impactful research. The Institute is known for its pioneering work in biomedical and clinical informatics, aging and health services research, health data standards, and implementation science with a longstanding commitment to translating scientific discovery into improvements in healthcare delivery, practice, and policy.
Regenstrief is an independent 501(c)(3) research institute closely affiliated with Indiana University and works in partnership with leading healthcare and community organizations, including IU Health and Eskenazi Health. This distinctive position at the intersection of academia and real-world healthcare delivery, coupled with the Institute's significant health data assets and interdisciplinary scientific expertise, enables Regenstrief researchers to address complex health challenges and translate research into meaningful impact. With a strong foundation of accomplished investigators, dedicated research staff, longstanding institutional partnerships, and support from the Regenstrief Foundation, the Institute is well positioned to build upon its rich history of research innovation while expanding its scientific reach, partnerships, and impact.
Regenstrief seeks an accomplished and visionary Chief Research Officer (CRO) to provide scientific and strategic leadership for the Institute's research enterprise and help shape its next era of growth and impact. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the senior executive leadership team, the CRO will work closely with Center Directors, investigators, research scientists, staff, Indiana University leaders, health system partners, funders, industry, government, and other external stakeholders to strengthen and expand Regenstrief's research portfolio.
The next CRO will join Regenstrief at an important moment. The Institute has a strong international reputation, exceptional health data assets, a committed community of investigators and staff, longstanding institutional and clinical partnerships, and meaningful support from the Regenstrief Foundation. At the same time, changes in the research funding environment create an imperative to diversify revenue, deepen industry and other non-federal partnerships, develop larger and more collaborative research programs, and translate Regenstrief's scientific strengths into new opportunities. The CRO will build partnerships that align with Regenstrief’s mission and scientific strengths and translate groundbreaking science into actionable improvements in human health.
The CRO will be both a scientific leader and an enterprise builder. They will establish a clear, Institute-wide research direction; bring greater cohesion across Regenstrief's Centers and investigators; strengthen the infrastructure and processes that enable excellent science; cultivate and recruit outstanding researchers; and create new pathways for investigators to collaborate across disciplines and pursue ambitious opportunities. The CRO will also play a central role in expanding strategic partnerships and accelerating the work of the Office of Strategic Innovation (OSI), converting Regenstrief's distinctive scientific capabilities into consequential collaborations with health systems, industry, government, foundations, and other partners.
The CRO will address the following key priorities: articulate and advance a cohesive research strategy; grow funding and diversify the research portfolio; build strategic partnerships and accelerate the Office of Strategic Innovation; strengthen collaboration and connectivity across the research enterprise; develop, recruit, and support outstanding investigators; strengthen research infrastructure and processes; advance research translation and impact; and elevate Regenstrief’s scientific visibility and reputation.
Candidates should possess outstanding academic credentials (PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral-level degree), significant scientific credibility and accomplishment, and a proven scientific track record. They should also have executive leadership experience, experience leading complex research programs, and success in navigating highly matrixed academic, clinical, and research environments.
