DC 5: Spatiotemporal Hybrid Light–Matter States

Umeå University Department of Physics Umeå, Sweden

About the position

Doctoral Candidate position at the Department of Physics, Umeå University, Sweden

Objectives:

  • Explore wide-bandgap semiconductors and high-quality excitonic or molecular emitters coupled to time-modulated gratings.
  • Perform ultrafast pump–push–probe experiments with sub-10 fs resolution to demonstrate coherent control of spatiotemporal polaritons.
  • Design spatiotemporal metamaterial systems supporting hybrid light–matter states, using finite-element simulations and quantum models extending the Tavis–Cummings Hamiltonian.

Create spatiotemporal polaritons using ultrafast light-matter interactions. Theoretical skills will be developed during a 6-month secondment in Madrid, with a 3-month industrial secondment at Ultrafast Innovations GmbH.

Starting date: February 2027

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physics, applied physics, optics/photonics, materials science, nanoscience, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • You should not have a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.
  • You must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment (this is a requirement from the funding authority).
  • Strong skills in the English language.
