About the position

Doctoral Student In Hormone Sensing Between Biophysics And Biotechnology

Third-cycle subject: Applied Physics or Biotechnology

Hormones shape metabolism, fertility, mood and sleep, yet they are rarely measured, and then mostly by blood tests in a clinic. In the Hormones Project, funded by KTH InspireLab, we are developing an affordable optical system that measures six hormones in urine, at home, every day. As a doctoral student you will work at the border between biophysics and biotechnology: you will prepare and characterise urine samples, validate against established laboratory methods, and design and test the detection system.

The project is jointly led by three research leaders at AlbaNova and SciLifeLab.

Supervision: Carlota Canalias, Michael Fokine and Cecilia Williams are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

To be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

The candidate must have a master's degree in biophysics, biotechnology, biomedicine, physics or a closely related field.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach,
  • analyze and work with complex issues,
  • demonstrate knowledge of gender equality from an intersectional perspective and an understanding of why gender aspects are important when conducting research and developing technology,
  • demonstrate good written and spoken English, as it is required in day to day work.
  • experience of laboratory work with optical, spectroscopic, biophysical or bioanalytical methods is considered a merit.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams is also a merit.

Furthermore, the candidate should have a genuine interest in learning new disciplines.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
