About the position

Position Description

Academic Job Description

Department of Animal Science

Postdoctoral Associate

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.

Position Function

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct independent research in the Laboratory of Integrative Physiology (Selvaraj Lab) addressing fundamental questions at the intersection of cell biology and physiology. Research will focus on mechanisms underlying cellular reprogramming, pluripotency, gamete maturation, fertilization, and early embryo development using cellular and large-animal experimental systems. Related research may include investigation of cellular signaling, gene and protein function, and physiological approaches to improving in vitro fertilization and pregnancy success.

The Postdoctoral Associate will design and conduct experiments, critically analyze and interpret data, and develop or adapt experimental approaches to address emerging scientific questions. The individual will be expected to independently advance research projects, contribute intellectually and experimentally to collaborative studies, and communicate research findings through presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Projects may evolve based on experimental findings, emerging research questions, and the scientific interests and expertise of the individual.

The Postdoctoral Associate will also participate in the broader intellectual activities of the laboratory and will have opportunities to mentor and train undergraduate researchers.

Anticipated Division of Time

80% - Research

and mentorship to undergraduate students as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in the life sciences with a background in cell and molecular biology.
  • Experience or understanding in reproductive biology, cell fate reprogramming and systems physiology is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to rapidly learn, critically evaluate, and integrate information across disciplines, while maintaining awareness of both foundational and emerging knowledge.
  • Ability to independently design, conduct, troubleshoot, and adapt experiments to address scientific questions.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, including rigorous documentation, scientific writing and publication, and the ability to lead projects independently while working collaboratively.
